Pacific Carving, Museums and Communities

Pacific Carving, Museums and Communities

Featuring Professor Steven Hooper (Director of the Sainsbury Research Unit, University of East Anglia, Norwich UK) and Dr. Julie Adams (Curator for Oceania, The British Museum).

International scholars join the Bishop Museum ‘ohana to discuss the many ways in which Pacific carving practices and carved objects in museum collections have become a vessel for engagement with communities across Oceania.

Working with canoe builders in Fiji to create new drua (canoes), and collaborating closely with communities to honor and redisplay Pacific carving collections, the guests speakers will reflect on their journey through caring for carved collections and supporting the perpetuation of Pacific carving practices.

Marking the last week of the Bishop Museum original exhibition Kini Ke Kua: Transformative Images, this presentation will celebrate the breadth and depth of carving practices across the Pacific, and will highlight the role of museums in supporting and perpetuating this multifaceted art form today.

The exhibition will be opened after the talk for all attendees to enjoy. Pupus and refreshments will be served.
